How Fragrance Load Affects Wax Melt Performance

How Fragrance Load Affects Wax Melt Performance

Why Fragrance Load Matters in Wax Melts

When it comes to wax melts, scent isn't everything - stability, consistency, and craftsmanship matter just as much. The balance between wax and fragrance oil is called the fragrance load, and it's the hidden science behind how well a wax melt performs. At Tillybell, we've spent years perfecting that balance through our bespoke coconut wax blend - achieving a level of scent clarity that's both long-lasting and beautifully clean.

What Is Fragrance Load?

Fragrance load refers to the percentage of fragrance oil that a wax can safely and effectively hold. Each wax type has a maximum limit beyond which its performance begins to suffer. Exceed that limit, and you'll encounter issues such as sweating, separation, oily residue, or even excessive smoke when melted. In short, more isn't always better.

Many paraffin and soy waxes have much lower capacities - some as little as 5%, others around 8–10%. Push beyond that, and the wax becomes oversaturated, causing the scent to burn off quickly or perform unevenly. It's a common reason why cheaper melts smell strong at first but fade fast after just one use.

Why Coconut Wax Performs Differently

Coconut wax is a soft, creamy natural wax with outstanding fragrance retention. It can hold a fragrance load of up to 12%, depending on the oil and formulation. This means it carries more scent molecules within the wax structure - releasing fragrance slowly, evenly, and without residue. It's what makes Tillybell Wax Melts so beautifully consistent and pure.

However, not every fragrance oil behaves the same way. Some oils perform best around 10%, while richer or heavier base notes may require less - around 5–8% - to achieve balance. Too much oil, even in coconut wax, can cause the scent to burn off too quickly or alter the wax's texture. It's about knowing your wax, your oil, and above all, your quality.

The Art of the Perfect Blend

There isn't a single formula or set answer - achieving the ideal fragrance load is part science, part craft. To perfect the Tillybell blend, we've spent years testing, pouring, and refining. Every fragrance is trialled at multiple load levels until we reach the balance that delivers a clean melt, full scent throw, and beautiful longevity.

This meticulous process ensures that every Tillybell bar - from Fresh Linen to Pomegranate, Mandarin & Amber - performs perfectly, every time. No residue, no harshness, just pure, clean fragrance crafted to last.

Why Balance Matters More Than Strength

High fragrance load doesn't automatically mean stronger scent - it's about balance. Too much oil can overpower the wax and result in poor burn quality, while too little can lead to a weak throw. The key is harmony between the wax structure and the oil composition, allowing each note to unfold naturally as the wax melts.

Our coconut wax provides that harmony. It melts slowly, allowing fragrance to disperse gradually rather than evaporate in bursts. This results in a scent that feels fuller, lasts longer, and remains true to its original character from start to finish.

The Tillybell Difference

At Tillybell, we pour every melt by hand in County Durham using small-batch precision. Each batch is thoroughly tested for scent load, melt time, and clarity before it is released from the studio. We don't add colourants, boosters, or fillers - only pure coconut wax and the highest-grade UK fragrance oils. The outcome is fragrance done properly: clean, elegant, and dependable.
